May marks Queensland Small Business Month — an opportunity to recognise and celebrate Queensland’s 495,000 small and family businesses, who collectively employ more than one million people and contribute more than $131 billion to the state’s economy.
In the Whitsundays, there are currently 4,200 businesses supporting a labour force of 20,355 people and generating a Gross Regional Product of $4.4 billion. With significant investment and economic expansion on the horizon, the region’s small business community plays a vital role in shaping its future prosperity.
The Whitsundays Chamber of Commerce and Industry acknowledges the invaluable contribution of small businesses — from sole traders and side-hustlers to family-run enterprises and small businesses — who form the backbone of the local economy. The Chamber’s mission is to drive sustainable business growth, build connectivity, and foster a supportive environment for businesses of all sizes.
During May, the Chamber encourages all residents to support local businesses by shopping locally, recommending businesses to friends and family, engaging with local business social media pages, and sharing positive online reviews.
As part of Queensland Small Business Month celebrations, the Chamber will host a special event bringing together the Whitsunday business community, government representatives, and key stakeholders to address regional challenges and opportunities.
Featuring the Queensland Small Business Commissioner Dominique Lamb, Queensland Government minister and Member for Whitsunday The Hon. Amanda Camm MP, and Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins, this event will explore the following:
- Election Promise Report Card — Progress updates on infrastructure improvements, red tape reduction, and small business priorities.
- Lessons from TC Alfred — Insights into the impact of recent weather events and building future resilience.
- On Your Marks! — Exploring opportunities presented by the 2032 Queensland Olympics.
