Looking Back: Where Are They Now? Celebrating the 2025 Whitsunday Business Award Winners

July 3, 2026 by Chamber Liaison

One year on from the inaugural Whitsunday Business Awards, the impact of being recognised continues to resonate with the region’s business leaders, entrepreneurs and organisations.

The Awards were established to celebrate excellence across the Whitsundays, recognising businesses and individuals who are driving innovation, leadership, customer service, sustainability and community impact. For many winners, the recognition has delivered far more than a trophy – providing confidence, credibility and an opportunity to reflect on their achievements.

As applications are closing soon for the 2026 Whitsunday Business Awards, last year’s winners are encouraging others to take the leap and share their stories.

Rising Star: Employee, Apprentice or Trainee
Winner: Shontelle Buchanan, Bowen Rail Company

Recognised for her technical expertise, leadership and commitment to inclusion, Shontelle Buchanan has become a respected signalling specialist at Bowen Rail Company. From apprentice to mentor and advocate for diversity, she is helping shape a more inclusive workforce while continuing her own professional development through studies in electrical engineering and business leadership.

Reflecting on her award, Shontelle said:

“As I was in the rising star/apprentice category I would say the award was an excellent bit of recognition for my hard work and dedication within my traineeship. It was incredibly rewarding to have my efforts acknowledged, and the experience has given me greater confidence in my career.

Since receiving the award, it has opened the door to new opportunities for professional growth and has allowed me to broaden my skills and experience. I would encourage businesses to nominate their trainees and apprentices, as it’s a fantastic way to recognise their commitment and achievements while helping them build confidence and create opportunities for future career development.”

Customer Service Excellence
Winner: Magnums Accommodation Airlie Beach

At Magnums Accommodation Airlie Beach, exceptional customer service is built on empathy, professionalism and genuine care. The team’s commitment to creating memorable guest experiences, investing in staff development and continually improving service standards earned them the inaugural Customer Service Champion Award.

Elizabeth Hackett reflected on what the award meant for the team.

“Winning this award means a great deal to our team because it recognises the passion and hard work that goes into delivering exceptional customer service every day. Great service doesn’t happen by chance—it comes from the right people, ongoing training, and a genuine commitment to our guests. To be recognised as setting the benchmark for our region is something we’re incredibly proud of.”

The recognition reinforced the team’s culture.

“Every award is a reminder to our team that their hard work makes a real difference. It builds confidence, reinforces our culture, and motivates us to keep raising the bar. Recognition like this is not just great for our business—it’s incredibly rewarding for the people who make it all happen every day.”

Elizabeth’s advice to businesses considering entering is straightforward.

“Just do it! Entering awards is a win-win. The process challenges you to step back, reflect on how far you’ve come, celebrate your achievements, and really define what makes your business unique. Whether you take home an award or not, you’ll gain valuable insights into your business—and that’s a win in itself.”

Eco Excellence
Winner: Coral Sea Marina

Coral Sea Marina earned the inaugural Eco Excellence Award for embedding sustainability into every aspect of its operations. Through marine conservation, responsible boating initiatives and environmental education, the marina continues to set the benchmark for sustainable tourism in the Whitsundays.

The team said the award recognised years of dedication.

“Winning the inaugural Eco Excellence Award was incredibly rewarding for our team, because it recognised years of commitment to making sustainability part of everything we do.

At Coral Sea Marina, environmental stewardship is embedded in our daily operations, from protecting the Great Barrier Reef and supporting marine conservation projects to educating our guests and the wider boating community. Receiving this award was a proud moment that acknowledged the collective effort of every member of our team and reinforced that the choices we make every day have a meaningful impact.

The recognition has strengthened our reputation as an industry leader in sustainable marina operations. It has enhanced our relationships with our guests, industry partners and stakeholders, while also motivating our team to continue looking for new ways to innovate and improve our environmental performance.

For businesses considering applying, I’d encourage you to do it. The application process itself is a valuable opportunity to reflect on your achievements, measure your progress and celebrate the work your team has accomplished. You don’t need to have all the answers or be perfect—if you’re genuinely committed to making a positive environmental impact, sharing your story can inspire others while showcasing the difference your business is making within our region.”

Trailblazing Young Entrepreneur
Winner: Sam Vanderpoel, Rolling with Netherpoel

At just 17 years old, Sam Vanderpoel impressed judges with his determination, practical skills and entrepreneurial drive. Building Rolling with Netherpoel into a trusted local business specialising in roller and panel door repairs, servicing and installations, Sam demonstrated that age is no barrier to business success.

Reflecting on his award, Sam said:

“I never expected to win, so it was a really special moment. The award gave the business more exposure and reminded me that even as a young business owner, its worth believing in yourself. I encourage anyone who is considering entering to give it a go.”

Community Champion
Winner: Bowen Tourism and Business

Bowen Tourism and Business was recognised for its outstanding contribution to the local community through tourism promotion, volunteer engagement and regional advocacy. As the not-for-profit organisation behind the Bowen Visitor Information Centre and Front Beach Information Booth, the team plays a vital role in welcoming visitors, promoting Bowen, Collinsville and the wider Whitsundays, and strengthening community connections.

Supported by 18 dedicated volunteers, the organisation has achieved record visitation, visitor growth exceeding the Queensland average, and expanded services through initiatives including Driver Reviver and the Bowen Audio Guide. Their commitment to community engagement through events, schools and volunteer programs continues to deliver lasting economic and social benefits for the region.

Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business, Leanne Abernethy, said it was an absolute honour to receive the inaugural Community Champion Award.

“To receive an award that recognised the meaningful difference we make through community contribution and initiatives was a very proud moment for the entire team.

“Contributing to our community is at the heart of what we do,” she said.

“This award had a positive and lasting impact.

“I would encourage other businesses to enter the Business Awards in 2026.

“We have so many great organisations and businesses in the Whitsundays region that deserve to be recognised.

“The awards night was also a great networking event with a nice vibe, so our team is looking forward to attending again this year.”

Business Leader of the Year
Winner: Kellee Fogg, Whitsunday Law

Under Kellee Fogg’s leadership, Whitsunday Law has become a cornerstone of the Whitsunday region, driving local employment, regional investment and community development. She has built a culture centred on mentoring local talent, supporting regional suppliers and giving back through community sponsorships and initiatives. Her leadership has strengthened both the regional economy and the broader business community, demonstrating how professional excellence and community commitment can go hand in hand.

Reflecting on her win, Kellee said:

“Winning this award was an incredibly proud moment for, not just me, but the entire team as it reflects their efforts as well as mine. While the award recognises me, I don’t succeed alone. It has reinforces the importance of leading with integrity, supporting others to succeed, and continually striving to make a positive impact on our team, our clients and our community.”

The recognition also strengthened the profile of Whitsunday Law.

“Receiving the award gave my business greater visibility and credibility within the region. It increased my confidence in leading my team and the values that fortify everything that I do. It has inspired me to continue learning, growing as a leader and looking for new and flexible ways to support my team and the community.”

Her advice for this year’s applicants is simple:

“I strongly encourage anyone considering applying to do so. Winning the award is only half of it. The application process gives you a chance to reflect on your leadership journey, acknowledge and celebrate your achievements and recognise your supportive team. There is value in sharing your story, the good and the bad. Every leader faces challenges, learns valuable lessons and makes a positive impact in different ways. Whether you are named a finalist or take home an award, the experience is rewarding and can provide valuable exposure, meaningful connections and a renewed sense of purpose.”

Applications Closing

With applications for the 2026 Whitsunday Business Awards closing at 11:59pm on Friday 17 July, businesses and individuals are encouraged to submit their applications before time runs out. Several award categories include separate divisions for micro and small businesses and medium to large businesses, ensuring organisations of all sizes have the opportunity to be recognised.

As last year’s winners demonstrate, the value of entering extends well beyond awards night. The application process provides an opportunity to reflect on achievements, celebrate your team, and showcase the innovation, resilience, leadership and community impact that are helping shape the future of the Whitsundays.
