Chamber Calls for Clarity on Regional Payroll Tax Rebate

The Whitsundays Chamber of Commerce and Industry is seeking greater clarity on the Queensland Regional Payroll Tax Rebate following concerns raised by businesses across regional Queensland.

The rebate was introduced to encourage regional employment and investment. However, some businesses are now sharing concerns about auditing and retrospective reassessments of rebates claimed over several years.

For the Chamber, there are two key concerns.

1. Retrospective repayments: Businesses that believe they claimed the rebate in good faith may face unexpected repayment liabilities, potentially creating significant cash flow and business confidence impacts.
2. Transparency and certainty: Businesses are questioning whether the interpretation of an employee’s “principal place of residence” has changed or is now being applied differently. If the interpretation or evidence requirements have changed, regional employers need clear guidance on what is required and how they can comply.

The Chamber supports appropriate compliance and auditing. However, businesses also deserve certainty that government programs are administered transparently, consistently and in line with their intended purpose.

We are now seeking to understand the potential impact on Whitsunday businesses.

Our short anonymous survey asks whether your business claims the Regional Payroll Tax Rebate, your business size and industry, and provides an opportunity to share any experience or concerns relating to the issue.

The Chamber is also liaising with the Mackay Region Chamber of Commerce and Queensland Small Business Commissioner and is in the process of raising this matter with Amanda Camm MP, Dale Last MP and Minister for Small and Family Business Steve Minnikin.
