Are you counting the right things?

January 24, 2024 by Chamber Liaison

As we come close to the end of January and the traditional holiday period, the Chamber looks forward getting stuck into 2024!

A wise business partner passed on some thoughts I would like to share when considering business aspirations for the new year.

Are you counting the minutes you work … or the impact of those minutes?

Are your business metrics reflecting and measuring genuine progress … or just numbers to make you feel good?

Is your business success measured in the steps you take … or the destinations those steps take you?

We all often count the wrong things. Long hours don’t always mean productivity. Having lots of meetings is not as effective or productive as fewer well-structured meetings. Counting short-term gains can sacrifice the seeds of future growth — sustainable success is a marathon, not a sprint. Counting and slavishly following KPIs can lead to tunnel vision and neglect of qualitative factors like customer experience, employee well-being, and the bigger picture.

Quality over quantity. Work smarter not harder. Good advice for us all.

Don’t forget that a few new industrial relation laws have been introduced that apply to all businesses.

From 6 December there are new requirements fixed term contracts that relate to how long contracts can be, how many times they can be renewed, and consecutive contracts.

There have also been changes to employee authorised deductions from their pay, and superannuation is now included the National Employment Standards.

The new ‘Closing Loopholes’ law has introduced new rules for labour hire workers, employees experiencing family and domestic violence, small business redundancy, workplace delegate rights, and right of entry.

The Chamber strives to keep our members informed of new laws and changes and we encourage Chamber members (and all businesses in the region) to ask for advice if you are not sure.

Whether you are a start-up, micro business or a large enterprise the Chamber offers a range of services and support to help you strengthen your place in the Whitsundays business community.

Looking forward to an exciting 2024!
