(and How to Set One Up)
Here’s a small thing that’s quietly costing small businesses theit visibility: your Facebook page URL.
If yours still looks like a jumble of numbers — something like facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550... — you’re harder to find, harder to share, and in a lot of cases, impossible to tag. And if people can’t tag you, they can’t help you grow your reach.
It used to sort itself out. Facebook would assign your page a tidy username automatically once you hit a certain number of followers. That doesn’t reliably happen anymore, so plenty of Whitsundays businesses are sitting on a clunky numeric link without realising it’s holding them back.
The good news? It takes about two minutes to fix.
What is a personalised Facebook URL?
A personalised URL — Facebook calls it a username or “vanity URL” — is the custom web address for your page. Instead of a long string of digits, it reads as your business name: facebook.com/WhitsundaysChamber, for example.
That same username is what powers your @handle. When someone types the @ symbol and starts spelling your business, your page should pop up so they can tag you. No username, no clean handle — and that’s where the tagging trouble starts.
Why does it matter for your business?
It sounds cosmetic, but a personalised URL does real work:
- You can be tagged. When a customer, supplier, or fellow member wants to credit your business in a post, they need to be able to find you by name. A personalised handle makes that happen. Without one, they often give up — and you miss the free exposure.
- You’re easier to find. A clean, name-based address is easier to search, remember, and recognise as legitimate.
- You look professional. A numeric link on your website, business card, or email signature looks unfinished. Your name looks like you mean business.
- You’re easier to share. Whether it’s a printed flyer or a quick verbal “just search our name on Facebook,” a readable URL removes friction for the person trying to reach you.
For a small business relying on word of mouth and local networks, every tag is a small ad someone else has made for you, for free.
How do you set up a personalised Facebook URL?
You’ll need to be an admin of the page, and ideally do this on a desktop browser — it’s a little easier to navigate than the app. Here’s the process:
- Log in and go to your business page (not your personal profile).
- Click your page name or profile picture to open the page, then find Edit or the About section.
- Look for the Username field (sometimes shown as “Create @username” or “Create Page @username”).
- Type your preferred username. Keep it as close to your business name as possible — no spaces, and it needs to be unique across Facebook.
- If it’s available, you’ll see a green tick. Save, and you’re done.
A few tips worth knowing: usernames can include full stops but not spaces or most symbols, they need to be at least five characters, and you can’t use a name that’s already taken. Keep it simple and obvious — the whole point is that people can guess it and spell it correctly.
What if the username you want is taken?
If another business or an old, inactive page has claimed your exact name, don’t panic. Add your location or a short word that fits — think YourBusinessWhitsundays or YourBusinessAU. It still reads cleanly and keeps you searchable. Just avoid random numbers if you can, because they’re the very thing we’re trying to move away from.
While you’re in there, it’s worth a quick check that your page category, contact details, and website link are all current too. A tidy page is a taggable page.
Do it now
This is one of those five-minute jobs that’s easy to put off and easy to overlook — but the payoff is real. A personalised Facebook URL makes your business findable, shareable, and taggable, and it quietly lifts how professional you look every time someone lands on your page.
