Local Businesses Gain Valuable Internet Connectivity Insights at Chamber Business Breakfast Briefing

June 18, 2026 by Chamber Liaison

Local business owners and professionals gathered recently for a practical and informative Whitsundays Chamber June Business Breakfast Briefing presented by Emma Murphy of nbn Co., gaining valuable insights into internet connectivity, technology options, and network upgrades available across the Whitsundays.

The event provided attendees with a clearer understanding of the role of nbn Co. as Australia’s wholesale broadband provider and how it differs from retail service providers. While nbn Co. builds and maintains the national broadband network infrastructure, retail service providers deliver internet services directly to customers, offering varying levels of support, pricing, and service inclusions.

One of the key discussion points was the difference between residential and business-grade internet services. Attendees learned that eligible premises across the Whitsundays have access to a range of residential, business and enterprise-grade fibre options, with business-grade services offering faster upload speeds and enhanced support designed to meet the needs of modern businesses.

The briefing also addressed some of the most common questions received by nbn Co. representatives.

Many attendees were surprised to learn they have access to a wide range of retail service providers and are not limited to a single provider. Businesses and residents can compare providers based on service, support, pricing, and inclusions to find the best fit for their needs.

Another topic of strong interest was fibre upgrades. More than 12,000 premises across the Whitsunday region are currently eligible to upgrade to full fibre. Unlike ageing copper infrastructure, fibre is less susceptible to environmental factors such as water ingress, corrosion, and temperature fluctuations, providing a more reliable and weather-resilient connection.

Attendees also heard that older Wi-Fi routers can often contribute to poor internet performance. Equipment that is several years old may not be capable of delivering the speeds available today, while router placement within a home or business can also significantly impact connectivity. Upgrading equipment or introducing a mesh Wi-Fi system can often improve performance.

The session reinforced the importance of reliable digital infrastructure in supporting local businesses, remote work, online learning, telehealth services, and community resilience during severe weather events.

Following the briefing, nbn Co. representatives will continue engaging directly with the community through a series of local pop-up information sessions:

  • Jocheim’s Pies, Bowen – Monday 22 June, 7am–9am
  • Whitsunday Plaza – 10am-3pm Wednesday 24 June
  • Bowen Show – Tuesday 23 June

These pop-up sessions provide an opportunity for residents and businesses to ask questions, check fibre upgrade eligibility, and receive personalised advice about their internet connectivity options.
